AI Is Making You Invisible

AI Is Making You Invisible

The quality of AI-generated images has improved significantly since our first post about AI and the future of advertising, and newer models are turning out images so good the average viewer can’t distinguish them from a real photograph.

With these advancements, you’ve probably noticed a LOT more AI-generated ads for everything from upcoming local events to political campaigns.

If you’re short on time, AI generated ads can give you more hours in the day to take care of other tasks. And if you’re a non-profit or a small business, saving money on advertising can be a life-saver. But how many times have you seen an AI flyer and not been able to tell at a glance who it’s for? What venue had that concert you wanted to attend? Who was that politician with the talking points you liked?

When it comes to advertising, the goal is to stand out from the competition, not fade into the background. But as we’ve seen lately… the more things change, the more they look the same.

If AI is so advanced, why is everything turning out the same? Why aren’t your slick AI-generated flyers getting the attention you need?

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of the company behind Grand Theft Auto, put it this way:

“Data sets by their very nature are backward-looking. Creativity by its very nature is forward-looking. AI is really good at asset creation, but hit creation is not asset creation… Clones don’t sell. All hits, are by their very nature, unexpected. Things that are data driven in their entirety can’t be unexpected.”

If AI can’t create anything new, how can you expect it to make your business a hit with consumers? When everyone is using the same tools that pull from the same training data, using AI to make your business stand out is almost impossible. And if you're not careful, too much AI slop can turn off potential customers for good.

If your only option is AI, be sure to consider these tips when generating promotional artwork for your business:

  1. Use generated imagery to enhance your design but don’t rely solely on AI for your entire ad.
  2. Give the LLM your brand guidelines so your ads still retain some of your brand's style. Keep in mind this means you're training AI on your brand attributes, so what makes you unique is now part of their training data for others to use.

The important thing to remember is this: don't let AI make your business invisible. Let's connect human to human to show your customers how unexpected you can be – and leave the invisibility to us.
